Otto Upton In Canada!

Some people are 'missing' from each of the census...
some people though are enumerated twice.
In 1910 that is the case with Otto Upton.

1910 census - Warren Co, PA
Here Otto is shown living with his parents and siblings.

1910 census - Spokane Co., WA
Here Otto (10 from the bottom) is in the wilds of Spokane Co., WA working in a logging camp.

1911 Canadian Census - Humboldt, Saskatchewan
But most surprising of all is that one year later in 1911, Otto appears in the Canadian census (3rd from bottom).  He is working as a farm hand.  Who knew?

WWI Draft Registration

Otto's WWI Draft Registration is significant as it lists his date and place of birth - 31 May 1890 - Garland, PA.  In June of 1917 Otto lived in Cherry Grove, OR with his 'wife and child'.   He is listed as a farmer - medium height and build with blue eyes and dark hair.

WWII Draft Registration

WWII Draft Registration

Twenty-five years later (1942) Otto Upton registered as part of the "Old Man's Draft" during WWII. His birth date has changed to 1892 - he signs his full name.  And he is missing part of his right ear.

The 1940 census finds Willard Waning's sister, Nellie Waning Gray living in Bangor, Maine.  Sometime before 1903 she divorced Fred Gilmore Gray and returned to using her maiden name.  She is listed as doing housework for the Terratine Club and had an 8th grade education.  She rented her home for $12 a month and also had a lodger living with her.

I had no idea what the Terratine Club might be.   It looks to have been a men's club of some sort.

The 1940 Census - Mathew McAdam

1940 U.S. Census Blaine County, Montana

The header on this census page notes "All of these persons live on a farm".  Mathew had an 8th grade education while his wife, Magna was a high school graduate.  This follows a common pattern where the women attended school for a longer period of time than their male contemporaries.  The McAdams own their home, valued at $200 - I think this does not include the value of any livestock or acreage.  There are two hired men who reside with them.
