The Caufields Visit Blooming Prairie, MN - 1925

Ella McAdam Caufield travelled back "home" a second time with her son, Waldo.  The photo  shows Waldo, and Bowser the dog, Jean McAdam Dennis (a half-sister, she really was Jean Burnet Dennis, but took her step-father's surname as a young child), Ella McAdam Caufield, and her father Matthew McAdam.  The photo is dated 1925.

Is This Uncle Willard?

William Coffin of Pittsfield, Maine is a candidate for "Uncle Willard".  Note the long angular face in both photos - both photos from Pittsfield, Maine.  The problem is, he's certainly not Willard Lowe Waning's uncle...the mystery continues.

Who is Uncle Willard?

This photo simply says "Uncle Willard Pittsfield, Maine"
Sure wish I could figure out who this is...
We have Willard Lowe Waning - and no other Willards in the family tree.
It's a mystery!

A Snowy Cold Day in Western Oregon

I thought the Michiganers would be amused to see our "Big Snow" of this morning.  All public schools (Except the U of O - poor Matt!) have been cancelled - not so much because of the snow, but because of the icy roads.

Early morning at Clos du Bois...

Later in the morning...

The California Quail are out and about...

As are the doves...

The "formerly-feral" cat - Tom-Cat knows that today is a good day to be indoors!

It would seem that Ella McAdam Caufield took her first-born baby boy, Waldo, back to Blooming Prairie, MN to show him off to her father and brothers and sisters.

The Wallace Family

This photo says it is Rob Wallace...and that is all.

So I am guessing, speculating a bit that the woman is either his wife, Violet Whyte, or his sister, Henrietta (Rhetta) Wallace Francis.  Looking at other photos of Rhetta, it certainly could be her...

Anyway, Robert Stewart Burnet Wallace was born the 21st of November 1880 in the Bridgeton District of Glasgow, Scotland - the second child of James Russell Wallace and Agnes Burnet Wallace.
He immigrated with his parents and settled in Dayton, OH where he married Violet Whyte in 1902.  They had six children: James Russell Wallace, William Whyte Wallace, Robert Stewart Burnet Wallace, Donald Wilson Wallace, Agnes Burnet Wallace, and Marion E. Wallace.

Tourists in California - Back in the Day

James Russell Wallace and Margaret McAdam

Sometime before her death in 1937, Margaret McAdam went out to California to visit her maternal aunt and uncle - Agnes Burnet Wallace and James Russell Wallace.
The Wallace family's journey to and around America was a genealogical challenge.  I'd been told they emigrated to Canada, so I concentrated my efforts in that direction...to no avail!
Instead, I found the Wallace family came from Glasgow, Scotland through Boston harbor in 1882, and settle for a while in Worcester, MA.  By 1900 they had moved to Dayton, OH where they lived for many years.  They then spent a few years with their daughter Rhetta in Imperial, Saskatchewan (Canada - finally!) before moving to Whittier, CA by 1930.

I figure this photo must have been taken in the late 1920's / early 1930's.  I love the hat Margaret is wearing - she looks like an Ecuadorian Indian.

Veteran's Day

We have extensive document military service for the Upton / Carter families beginning with Benjamin Upton.

He ran away from home (Maryland) as a teenager and enlisted for service in the War of 1812 in Ohio.  He was born about 1793 and after the war ended he moved to Pennsylvania where he married Ellen McCray and raised a family.  He died the 3rd of March 1877 and is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery near Garland, PA.

Benjamin's son, James Upton (1834-1877) served with Company I of the 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry in the Civil War.  He too is is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery near Garland, PA.

Lastly, Joseph Carter (1829-1889), father-in-law of James Monroe Upton (1863-1943) also served in the Civil War in Company B of the Pennsylvania 82nd.  He is buried Bear Lake Cemetery, Warren Township, PA.

We are most fortunate as a family to have a privately publish manuscript with the Civil War letters Joseph wrote his wife Nellie (Ellen) Carter, and those she wrote to him in return.  Their love and respect for each other is omnipresent, as is the suffering and sacrifice which each made.

Hello to all from Michigan(:

This year I joined Science Olympiad, so I'll be competing in different events at statewide competitions throughout the winter. I'm doing Forensics, which requires me to solve a crime using techniques that actual scientists use, and Disease Detectives, which has to do with food borne illnesses. I'm pretty excited(:

Michigan Science Girls
But as with any sort of extra curricular activity, there's fundraising. In this case, we're selling pies.  There are lots of different kinds, the only problem is transportation, so it'd actually be a donation.
Pies are $9 each, and we're supposed to sell 20, and I've sold 8. They're so we can go to the Clio Invitational over by Detroit in January. It's an overnight meet, and it determines whether or not we make it to State. If we make it to State, it opens up a lot of opportunities for us students. So all in all, it's a for a great cause. (:

If you'd like to donate, please make checks out to Allendale High School Science Olympiad.
The deadline is November 22nd.

Thanks bunches!
