Dear Connie,

I am in bed mow and its 12:00.  I got your letter yesterday but haven't got around to writing untill(sic) now.

Since today is Sunday we are going to have our meals half an hour earlyer(sic) so lunch is 1:00 today.

Dear Mom and Family,

It sunshined today! (how unusual for Cleawox). 

Today we started the day late, the counselers(sic) got up 15 min. late.

Lunch and dinner are the cooks night out so were(sic) going to have a cook-out.

By the way Shirleys grandma is the head cook cookie."

"Mom I have a dollar five left from the two dollars you gave me.  I bought a bunch of stamps a pad of pappers(sic) two batteries and some Jergens lotion.

Mom were(sic) going on a 8 mile hike.  I'll tell you about it later.

Dear Connie,

I decided to write you first when I got yours & Mommies letter.

Now to answer some of you(sic) questions.

I am fine and the weather is rainy.  I have made something for Mom, Dad, you, Barb, & Chuck.  Its a - - - "

We had planned to go to the Sand Dunes to day but it rained. (boo-hoo.)

But we did have breakfast in the rain, hers(sic) what we had - cold ceral(sic) cocoa & an orange.

Write me another letter and tell me how tiny is, by the way tell tiny "Smack, slurp, slurp... (over)"

Dear Mom and family

How are you all getting along? 

Here at camp its not raining but is afully(sic) cloudy most of the time.  Our Unit is perched on top of Viking Hill.

I forgot to tell you the nams(sic) of our counserlers(sic) - over

"their(sic) are four of there here they are Twisty - Tadge - Lucky - and our waterfront Puddles.

Tonight we are going to have a campfire in our unit and wear PJs we will get popcorn to eat.

We are going to have a secarate(sic) buddy and have to do nice things for them.

We just went on a trail blazing hike and one grope(sic) laid trail signes(sic) while another grope(sic) followed.

The meals are all good here.

I got here safely and had a nice trip down to camp.  Although I rode on the bus with Jo  I am on the top bunck(sic) with Sue  This letter is my passport to dinner, I can't have dinner with out it."

Recital Program

1956 saw the two younger Waning sisters perform pieces at a piano recital.  I wonder if they still know any of those mentioned in the program by heart?

We do not have many photos of Otto Upton, perhaps he did not like to have his photo taken.  For whatever reason, it makes the few we do have that much more precious.  This one was taken in June 1945.  The Uptons both look pretty pleased with their grand-daughters.

The Girl Scout Connection

The Girl Scout Pledge

In going through the ephemera Margaret Upton Waning saved, the long and happy connection between the Waning family and Scouting is readily apparent! 

Somewhere earlier today I ran across Gram's certification as a Brownie Scout Leader in the mid-1950's.  Both she and Gramps gave hours and hours of time to the Three Rivers Council, their local Eugene Girl Scout troop, and to Camp Cleawox.
