Summertime in the Cornfield

Margaret Upton Waning and Barbara

This series of photos is not dated, but judging by Barbara's age /size, perhaps they were taken the summer of 1943.

Upton Grandparents and Grandchildren - June 1945

Otto Upton, Sandie, Barbara, and Elsie Greenwell Upton

We do not have many photos of Otto Upton, perhaps he did not like to have his photo taken.  For whatever reason, it makes the few we do have that much more precious.  This one was taken in June 1945.  The Uptons both look pretty pleased with their grand-daughters.

...and Upton Cousins 1944

Rachel and Janet Upton

This photo says "Taken Easter Sunday 1944".  I believe it to be Rachel and Janet Upton, the daughters of Ross and Cora Upton.  These girls are 1st cousins of Margaret Upton Waning, though they are of an age of Margaret's daughters.

McAdam Cousins

Joseph Caufield, James Waning, Waldo Caufield

This is a photo of Jim Waning and his two younger cousins.  Joe and Waldo were the sons of Jack Caufield and Ella McAdam.  On the edge of this photo is written, "July 18, 1943 - Just before Nook's wedding".  I think it Waldo's marriage to Eleanor maybe - I've never heard of anyone referred to as "Nook".

Jerushia Grimm Greenwell

Design - "Lydia Sill"
Designer - Bent Creek
Fabric - 36 count Flax Edinborough linen
Floss - DMC - 1 strand over two threads
Started - 22 July 2010
Completed - 23 July 2010

I decided that "Lydia Sill - 1903 - Indian Territory" would personalize really nicely.  I decided to make a few changes and use the sampler to commemorate my Great-Greatgrandmother, Jerushia Grimm Greenwell.  When she was six years old, she came with her parents and siblings to the Oregon Territory. Family legend has it that she walked from Iowa to Oregon.  They settled in Damascus in Clackamas County.  She married Benjamin Franklin Greenwell, and had twelve children - ten who survived to adulthood.

Willard Lowe Waning - 1902

This photo says only "Unity, Maine July 1902".
I do know that Willard L. Waning is in the back row on the left.
Originally I thought a couple of the women might be his sisters, but upon looking at the information I have, both of his sisters had died by 1902.
So who the others are remains a mystery.

Logging - Margaret and O.D. Upton

Fred Gantenbein, Margaret Upton, and Helen Gantenbein - circa 1933

Talk about destiny in the making!
This photo shows Margaret Upton with her uncle and cousin.
A one-log load - it doesn't get any better than that.

This was O.D.'s first "Cat" - note that it does not have a blade.

Summer Time - Time to Play Baseball

Willard L. Waning - back row - 2nd from right (standing)

Once upon a time, every community, no matter how small, had a local baseball team.  This photo was taken sometime before 1924 when the Waning family moved to Oregon.  As Billy had a mustache in a photo by 1916, this photo maybe sometime before then...or after...

The tradition of baseball continues with Mikaila in 2009!

Helen Upton - October 1940

Helen Upton and Margaret Upton Waning - October 1940

This post is in honor of our new follower - an Upton relative!
In October 1940 Helen Upton came out to Oregon to visit relatives - her aunt Olivia Upton Adams, and her uncle Otto Upton.

We have a small series of photos that say
"Taken at Mom's - Oct 13, 1940.  The day Helen started Home for Penn."
(Mom refers to Elsie Greenwell Upton, wife of Otto Upton.)

Helen Upton - Springfield, OR - Oct 1940

Helen was born about 1914 in New York - the oldest child of Parney (Ernest) and Ida Upton.  In 1910 her father is enumerated as a Teamster for a Coal and Ice Company in Jamestown, NY.  By 1930 he was married, living in Erie, PA and a Steam Shovel Operator.  By that time the family included three children: Helen, Virginia, and Jane.

I have a vague memory of Helen, and Virginia and maybe Jane too coming out to visit their cousin Margaret Upton Waning - the mid-1980's perhaps?  Anyone else recall that?

Continuing With Our Reading, MA Theme

This photo is labeled "Mr. Pierpoint Reading, MA".
The 1900 census has a William Pierpont in Reading, MA.  He was born in June of 1877 in Maine - so could have been a neighbor of the Wanings or Halls.
By the 1920 census (still in Reading) he is married with four children and is the Driver of a Grocery Cart...making deliveries I assume.

Miss Putnam

Miss Putnam - Reading, MA

Before Billy Waning and Newman Hall headed out west to Montana, they spent some time (years?) in Reading, MA.  The back of this photo has the notation:
"Miss Putman - book-keeper at the store in Reading, MA where Billy and Newman worked".

Margaret and Jim Waning - Summer 1962

It must be morning..and early too if Gramps is off to log.
Note the tropical fish tanks in the background and the philodendron marching along the top of the shelves.

4th of July - Reno - 1954

There are no postcards or letters to help document the Waning family trip to Nevada in July of 1954.

Margaret and Jim

There are however, a few bits of ephemera that help to reconstruct the journey...

through Bend and Sisters...

down to Winnemucca

and Virginia City,

and finally Reno for the 4th of July.
