The 1940 Census - James Monroe Upton Family

1940 US Census - Pittsfield, Warren County, PA

Amazingly James Monroe Upton and his wife, Nellie Carter Upton were both still living when the 1940 census was enumerated.  They own a farm worth $5000.  James has a 6th grade education, and his wife an 8th grade education.  Also in the household are son Robert, daughter-in-law Mildred, grandson James, and a farmhand/lodger Wilbert Thompson.

The 1940 Census - The Tom McAdam Family

1940 US Census, Hayfield Township, Dodge County, MN

Take a look at Household #57.  Thomas McAdam reported his family's information to the Census Taker.  He has a 7th grade education, his wife an 8th grade education, while son Robert, a rural school teacher, has one year of college.  There is one hired hand living with them.  They own the farm, but strangely there is no value noted for it.

The 1940 Census - Otto and Elsie Upton

1940 US Census - Springfield, Lane County, Oregon

The Upton Family is in the middle of the page - Household #54.
They are recorded as living at 503 5th Street.  They own their home valued at $5000.  Elsie has an "x" by her name - she provided the family's information to the Census Enumerator.  Elsie and Otto are recorded as having a 8th grade education, V'Ona age 21 as 4 years of college, and Ellen age 16 as 4 years of high school.  The census also notes that 5 years earlier the famiy resided in Dexter, Oregon.  Otto is listed as a logging contractor and V'Ona as a book- keeper for a bank.

The 1940 US Census - Willard and Janet Waning

1940 US Census - Lost Creek Valley Precinct, Lane County, Oregon

Willard and Janet Waning are Household #93 near the bottom of the page.  Click on the photo for a 'bigger view".  Note Janet's name transcribed as Jeanette - a clue on how it was pronounced.  Willard has an 8th grade education, Janet is listed as a High School Graduate. The Dexter Ranch is valued at $5,000 - in a couple more years the Wanings would pay off the mortgage.

The question is: Where is Barbara Ann?

Here she is at the bottom of the page!  She's enumerated three pages after her parents with a note that she "belongs" to Household #11.

Olivia Upton Adams - Will - 1965 - Part Two

The settling of Olivia Upton Adam's estate was pretty straightforward.

Page 1 (top)

This document establishes that Olivia died the 27th of September 1965; unmarried at the time of her death.  She left no children or grandchildren.  Her surviving brother, Ross Upton acted as her representative.

Page 1 (bottom)

The estate was split four ways amongst the surviving brother and heirs of the deceased brothers.  Ross Upton, surviving brother received 1/4.  The sons of Robert Upton, James and Robert Jr each received 1/8.  The daughters of Otto Upton, Margaret, Ellen, and V'Ona each received 1/12.  The daughters and son of Ernest (Parney) Upton Helen, Virginia, Jane, Jerome, and Marleen each received 1/20.

I think the most important thing to note is that while this is a legal document, it is not without errors.  Several of the names are misspelling including "Veona".

Page 2 (top)

This page establishes the value of the estate: $4565.26, and the payment of the inheritance tax.

Page 2 (bottom)

There are no outstanding claims against the estate.

Page 3 (top)

The estate's monies were in the checking account of a local Pennsylvania bank.  Once again the listed schedule for distribution of funds.

Page 3 (bottom)

Ross Upton signed off that the information presented was a true accounting.
The estate took about eight months to process through probate.
