After obtaining an accurate inventory of the Jacob Grim's estate, Hiram Straight filed a petition with the County Court to sell the estate's personal property.

"In County Court of Clackamas County State of Oregon
In the matter of the Estate of Jacob Grimm, deceased
To Hon. N.W. Randall County Judge of said County:
H.A. Straight the undersigned, shows by this petition that he was duly appointed administrator of the estate of Jacob Grimm above named, deceased, on the 20th day of August 1877, and thereupon immediately qualifying, and is now acting as such administrator. That, on the 29th day of August 1877, he filed an inventory of said estate according to law, from which it appears that then is personal property belonging thereto of the appraised value of $1149.00 including certain notes & accounts.
That said personal property, excepting such notes & accounts is on the farm of said deceased, and most of it, from its return, needs especial care. That deceased left no widow or minor children, and said personal property cannot be properly cared for without living at considerable expense,..."

"...some person to stay on the farm and take charge thereof.
That it would be greatly to the interest of said estate to sell said personal property; and the heirs of said deceased are desirous that it shall be sold; and the same can be sold for more money now than at any other time.
No claims have as yet been presented against said estate; and the administrator believes that the indebtedness does not exceed $200.00.
Wherefore petitioner prays for an order directing him to sell all the personal property described in said inventory, except cash, accounts and notes.
